L' individu incertain - Alain Ehrenberg
- In french. First published in 1995.
The individual is today led to assume increasing responsibilities: politics looks like loosing its monopoly in the matters of taking care of the collective requirements for individual needs, private life is no more structured by stable rules and authorities. Self esteem and disponibility toward the others become major skills. Subjectivity invades the public ground and enlarges its reach, whether through pharmaceutics (illicit drugs, tranquillizers, antidepressant) or electronics (interactivity, realty shows, cyberspace). We have indeed entered into the area of the uncertain individual.
-> Highly comprehensive book putting under new perspectives some of the facts and acts of the individuals facing their fears and questionings in front of our society. The part dealing with realty show did not really bring me the answer I was expecting, that is "what makes individuals go public and share/offer some of their own inner personal issues on stage to millions of unknown witnesses?"...
